Statement From Kent County Council
We are aware that Stagecoach have recently carried out a review of their Dover network which has brought about significant change to local buses services in the District. Many of the changes have been positive although it is acknowledged that some have had a negative impact on local communities. Colleagues therefore worked closely with Stagecoach to understand the full impact of their scheme.
The villages of Tilmanstone, Staple, Great Mongeham and Northbourne have been of particular concern to the Council as it was evident from the proposals that these areas were destined to lose their only bus service. In light of this the Council decided to provide a replacement ‘shopper’ service by extending an existing KCC bus route (please see attached 541/542/544 timetable). This does not provide a like for like replacement and it is not as comprehensive a service as local residents may have previously enjoyed. However the budget for supporting services has been reduced and is coming under increasing pressure, so the Council is limited in what it can provide.
The attached timetable give times and days of operation and you will see that the 541 service serves Great Mongeham and Northbourne on a Monday and Friday. This should provide residents access to essential services and therefore meet the basic social need. In addition the Council also offers a Dial-a-Ride service that takes members directly from their door to a number of useful locations in their local area. Further details on this scheme are available on the KCC website along with information on any community transport that may be available in your area.
I am sorry that KCC is not in a position to offer more at present, but hope the above demonstrates that the Council has proactively taken action to help mitigate the impact of Stagecoach’s scheme.
